When a P-plater in a ute deliberately close-passed this rider, it wasn’t just a frightening moment—it was proof of how vulnerable cyclists can be on our roads. By sharing footage on UpRide, incidents like this become part of a global movement turning awareness into action, pushing for better planning, infrastructure, and accountability.
UpRide turns daily rides into data that drives change.

Why do you record your ride?
I ride all the time, so it’s only a matter of time before something happens. It’s best to be prepared. Most of what I capture is good for a laugh, but some moments are downright dangerous. Over time, all that footage builds a picture that can be really useful for government planning.

When do you feel most vulnerable as a cyclist?
When drivers carelessly drift into the bike lane.

What do you think are the most important things that can be done to improve safety for cyclists on the road
Good planning and infrastructure. For example; how the approach to a roundabout can affect where a driver’s blind spot is.

Did you report your incident? What was the reporting process?
Yes, I could only report it as a hooning incident. The police emailed me the next day to request the footage. I haven’t heard back from that yet. There needs to be improvements in how online reporting works for cyclists. I tried to report an incident a while ago as a traffic accident. The online system just assumed I was driving a car and it became impossible to report as a cyclist. I gave up in frustration.

What do you think about UpRide?
UpRide is awesome. It now represents a global network of cycling incidents. There is no excuse for local councils to say – “I didn’t know there was a problem there”.

What is your advice for other cyclists?
Gear up. Helmet, lights, hi-viz and cameras. The tech is available and, in the event of an accident, it will pay for itself. Plus it’s funny watching someone screw up a one way street.

Want to share your story?
