When Uprider J set out for his morning ride, he didn’t expect to capture being hit by a car. His dedication to cycling safety advocacy and holding motorists accountable is the reason he continues to record his rides.

Why do you record your ride?
I have had some near misses and falls while riding my bike, so I always record my rides. Typically rides where I am crossing an intersection and motorist run red lights, stop in crosswalks and fail to look both ways when turning on a red light. I originally purchased the Cycliq cameras to record rides that I could share segments on social media and also help promote our riding club. I never thought that I would actually get hit someday as I am proactive in being situationally aware and do not trust motorists unless I can get eye contact.

When do you feel most vulnerable as a cyclist?
Whenever I ride roads, or trails that intersect with roads, I am always looking for traffic that may cross my path.

What do you think are the most important things that can be done to improve safety for cyclists on the road?
Well, I can only change my behaviour and not the behaviour of others. Still, the best way to cure ignorance of drivers, is to educate. This can be through appearing on local news programs, speaking at ‘Ride of Silence’ events, encouraging legislatures for stronger laws and to promote safety and basic driving skills in driver’s and car licensing stations. I am also a vocal advocate for cycling safety in our community.

Did you report your incident? What was the reporting process?
I did call local law enforcement and they ticketed the driver. I do not know what fines he paid. His insurance has paid my medical bills and for a replacement e-bike. I did not get any post accident photos of the bike as it was picked up by the local Trek store for analysis. It was deemed unsafe. I simply called 911 and the police responded along with the fire and rescue as I did need to go to the emergency room for post accident diagnostic and care. I knew immediately I had hurt my ankle and ribs. Surgery was necessary to put in a plate and screws to secure my tibia and fibula, closed fractures. I was interviewed at the time. The video is clear and backed up my statements.

What do you think about UpRide?
The Upride website is a collection of examples from around the world of poor and sometimes aggressive drivers. Having video footage of such incidents that can be shared may help in educating motorist to be better drivers on the road.

What is your advice for other cyclists?
Always be aware if your surroundings. Be proactive on your defence. Record your rides, as they can help in any legal matters.
