White SUV passenger screaming out the window, California plate 9WTL403
13 May, 2026 - 1 week ago - on South Cedar Avenue This is how "bike lanes" next to parked cars are designed to work. They are car door lanes, not fit for riding anything in. They are car infrastructure intended to maximize danger to the cyclist to discourage us from using our bikes as transportation. To avoid being doored you have to ride too far to the left in the "bike" lane, which is uncomfortably close to car traffic. When people are doored by a negligent driver, it can knock people into oncoming traffic where cyclists have been maimed and killed. So either you put yourself at risk in the door zone (as they are designed) or you have to split the lane like this which some people in cars flip out about, creating conflict and dangerous situations. But I think it's safer to split the lane or even take the car lane than ride within the distance of a car door next to fast car traffic like this.
