Firework thrown at cyclist

1 year ago...more

During one of my favorite hill climbs, an occupant of a passing vehicle threw a firework device that detonated directly under my bike. The attached slow-motion video shows the hand of the occupant delivering the device my way. The device was evidently low yield, but I was certainly startled. Fortunately, I was not injured and did not crash. I maintained my concentration and kept climbing. Obviously, things could have been worse had the device detonated in my face, or if I lost concentration and crashed. My Gen 3 Fly 6 recorded the incident. From stills and slow motion of the video, the license plate was identified. I reported the incident to the police who identified the vehicle occupants. The matter was resolved among the vehicle owner, occupants, and myself. I have confidence that they will not repeat this or similar behavior. (Otherwise stated - lesson learned and let's move on.)

Note: The incident occurred at 11:52 AM according to my watch and Fly 12 timestamp. The Fly 6 timestamp was incorrect, and I reset it. Good to check as recorded dates and times may someday be crucial.
