Typical for West Shore Road

2 years ago in Mill Neck, United States

West Shore Road is the only connecting link between Oyster Bay, NY and Bayville, NY. When Superstorm Sandy wiped out the road, it was put back with a pedestrian path. So for my commute to my family's house I use the roadway for this stretch. Can't say I am surprised with this pass, yet surprised that there wasn't a crash with the blind corner. I cut the video down, yet thankfully the next car was an 1/8 of a mile down the road. So a tip of the iceberg situation. Not a close call, yet close pass, and not a full crash, yet still an incident that is the accepted normal for this stretch of road.

Because I know this corner, I have had close calls prior, and NY state allows for me to take the lane to the furthest right where deemed safe by the rider; I held to the left a lot. Prior close calls that I didn't post were chicken runs and I almost ate the crash rail. West Shore used to be a 45MPH road too. In the past 2 years it dropped to 35MPH. Yet look at this road profile, its hard to not let the horses loose a little bit. I just wish it wasn't an accepted occurence where other legal road users were put in danger.
