Dangerous close pass Arbroath

2 years ago...more

My friend and I were cycling a 100km route together and were on our last 20km.

Our local cycling club Montvelo CC currently runs a challenge called the '7 Burghs Challenge' and includes visiting the seven burghs/towns of Angus, Scotland. These towns are Montrose, Brechin, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Monifieth, Carnoustie and Arbroath.
Our planned route took us in a 62 Mile loop around all seven towns and we were on our last 10ish Miles when two drivers very closely together close passed us in a 40mph zone single carriageway.

We were riding behind each other and on hindsight perhaps should have ridden two abreast to avoid anyone from overtaking us unsafely.

Firstly a silver Peugeot SUV overtook us too fast and way too closely (excuse my swearing) immediately followed by a white BMX estate which passed us even closer in oncoming traffic.

As it happened the driver of the white BMW actually pulled into his driveway just 200yds ahead of us in the next village Marywell. (It's a long straight so we were able to see well)

My friend and I got off our bikes to approach the driver who immediately claimed that he overtook us with plenty of space.

See for yourselves.

The video footage was submitted to Police Scotland who have taken our report and will take action from there. Awaiting update.
