we chose to go around him instead of braking hard because there were other riders behind us and obviously braking hard in front of a group of riders doing a sprint interval isn't ideal. The speed at the time was around 45km/h.
I'm not sure if he underestimated our speed or didn't see us, but either way, no hard feeling to the driver as he apologized when he drove past us a bit later.
