Dangerous gaps in protected bike lanes make this sort of thing inevitable. In California, drivers are required to fully change lanes to pass, instead of straddling the lane and getting within a few inches of me. I nearly got hit by their mirror and side of their truck. Extremely negligent drivers like this need to lose their privilege to drive motor vehicles BEFORE they kill someone.
