Extremely Close Pass on Steep Hill

2 years ago...more

Harris Hill Road is a very popular bike route in our area because it is a very wide and lightly traveled passage out of town. I ride this road in one direction or another two or three days a week. I was passed extremely closely on the steepest portion of the short climb back into the city. I reported the plate number to the police department and they investigated the incident as reckless endangerment. They did contact the driver and he was immediately both surprised, contrite and apologetic to the investigator. He claimed the low angle of the sun was in his eyes. He said he thought he might have hit me and looked back to see that I was still pedaling. The video confirms this because you can see his head move from the center of the car back to the left side after the car corrects its swerve. Given that the vehicle is a 1979 Chevrolet Caprice with a sagging headliner, I did not feel right imposing a misdemeanor charge on someone without the means to deal with it. I think he learned his lesson and will be a more careful driver as a result. In that we both live in the same neighborhood, I will be vigilant in the event this unique vehicle and driver passes too close again. The Fly12 made it possible to collect a valid tag number to report to the police. Nothing would have happened were it not for good video record.
