Couldn’t wait 3 seconds…

4 years ago...more

Clearly someone's destination was more important than human life in front of them. A few seconds in, on my right, you'll see what would have been a good dooring from someone about to get out of their car -- I gave space and avoided that. And I had already had several close passes on this ride today so was getting fed up with drivers not giving space. When I heard this one coming up close behind I stuck out my left arm to wave/ask for some space...

Bad idea, clearly.

As the vehicle in question was overtaking and was so close to me, my arm wasn't even fully extended and my hand connected with the side of their car. The contact -- and the close proximity in passing -- nearly resulted in an off-the-bike crash. I maintained balance (notice the foot flying off the pedals) but ended up in the opposite lane.  My chain had come off so all I could do was coast back to the right shoulder. Some good chain slap and strained right leg below calf.

The vehicle behind this SUV was paying attention, slowed down, and checked to see if I was okay and then said he was trying to go get the license plate.

Was shaking a little as I put the chain back on. Finished the ride.
